Improving Warehouse Performance with FACTS

This week, I caught up with John Monck, our warehousing expert at Logistics Bureau, to talk about boosting warehouse performance. One key tool we use is the FACTS framework, which stands for Flow, Access, Capacity, Trace, and Safety.

The idea behind Flow is to make sure products move through the warehouse smoothly, with minimal handling and cost. Access is about keeping pick areas clear and easy to get to. Capacity focuses on having the right storage setup to make the most of your space. Trace is all about tracking inventory accurately. And Safety, of course, should be a priority in everything you do.

John explained how this framework can help you assess your current operations and identify areas that need work. Once you have a clearer picture, you can set up KPIs that help you track your progress and set new goals.

Making the Most of Your Inventory and Layout

Another big topic was how to organize inventory and your warehouse layout. A well-organized system not only saves time but also helps cut down on unnecessary steps. John shared a great example of a client who used performance targets to improve. By setting clear goals and offering rewards like team barbecues, they got the whole team on board and steadily improved productivity.

Benchmarking for Better Results

Benchmarking is another useful tool. I remember a client who was happy with 15 lines per hour until they found out the industry average was closer to 50. With a two-year plan in place, they gradually improved and hit that 50-line target. It just goes to show what’s possible when you know your benchmarks and work toward them.

By using the FACTS framework and focusing on inventory and layout, you can start making real improvements. It takes time, but with the right approach, even the toughest goals are achievable.
