Building Diverse and Effective Teams

Alma emphasizes the importance of managing diverse teams. Her current team includes members from various backgrounds and generations, requiring her to adopt different leadership styles to suit individual needs. This is where the Situational Leadership Model comes into play. Developed in 1969, this model allows Alma to adapt her management approach based on each team member’s readiness and skill level.

Alma shares an example: promoting a high-performing individual two levels up. In such cases, she spends more time guiding the employee until they develop confidence and capability in their new role.

Encouraging Open Dialogue and Feedback

Creating an environment where team members feel safe to share their perspectives is crucial. Alma sets clear expectations for openness, rewarding team members not only for innovative ideas but for implementing them. She also invites feedback on her own leadership, which helps maintain a supportive and productive work atmosphere.

Addressing Challenges in Team Dynamics

Not every team member will be a perfect fit, and Alma acknowledges the difficulty of handling poor performance. Before making harsh decisions, she prefers to explore if the individual might perform better in a different role. Sometimes, moving people within the team can reveal hidden potential and improve the overall dynamic.
